Sustainability of history

During the city tour we visited many places in Oahu such as, Kamahameha's statue, State Capitol Building and Iolani Palace. What I learned from this was that we need to preserve our cultural architecture. In Oahu all these places either existed for a long time or incorporated something that meant a lot to Hawaii. Iolani Palace was built in 1844 and was meant to be the most advanced palace of it's days. As it passed from hand to hand through the course of history, it finally became a museum in the 1960s. This building not only preserves Hawaiian culture but it also shows how places like this can educate the newer generation or foreigners about Hawaiian culture followed at that time and about how Hawaiians want to try and preserve their culture. Kamehameha's statue was a monument to respect the great King Kamehameha who united the 8 islands of Oahu together. This also shows how Hawaiians respect their ancestors and honour them by building monuments of or for them. State Capitol Building, was a building that incorporated all aspects of Hawaii, like the 8 pillars that represent the 8 inhabited islands and like the 132 glass panes that represent the 132 islands that make up Hawaii. This shows how Hawaiians respect their island through this building and use their architecture as a way to respect their traditions.

At Bishop's Museum we learnt a lot about the Hawaiian culture. What I learned from the museum was that cultural preservation is important. Within the building there ere many sections dedicated to explaining the Hawaiian culture and practices in the past and preserving some of the artifacts that were found or made to represent what was used before. It is important that this is done as it can show us what were the good habits and bad habits of civilisations in the past and we can learn from those mistakes or good doings. Also, these places that explain tradition are what help us give a sense of belonging to ourselves as it contains our history which is the backbone of our being.

Brendon:

We visited places such as the Kamehameha Statue, Iolani Palace as well as the State Capitol Building. This is mainly about sustainability of history, as things like the Kamehameha Statue was to remember him, for what he did in the past when he united all the 8 habitable hawaiian islands together. The Iolani Palace was where the king Kalakaua resided during his reign, and to remember what he did when he ruled hawaii. These are important people in the history of hawaii and they should be remembered and taught to the newer generations.

There is also the State Capitol Building which is built to represent many islands of hawaii. It has 8 huge pillars which represent the habitable hawaiian islands, and many small rectangle panels equals to the number of hawaiian islands. The building is empty, which represent the volcano crater. It is also curved on the outside, resembling a volcano, as it is a volcanic island. There are also ponds of water surrounding it, which means that hawaii is surrounded by the ocean.

It is important to remember important people in the past and learn from them, so that people lives will be better and will not make certain mistakes. These are also for the younger generation of people to learn more about those people.

The bishop museum contain many historical artifacts and stories about the history of Hawaii since the time when it was a kingdom by itself until now when it is a part of the United States.

It is important to have such a museum to store the artifacts as well as what happened in the past in hawaii, so that people will be able to learn from what happen in the past. This will give people a better understanding of Hawaii and how and why it is currently like how it is now. It can be used to educate the younger generation of people who are not familiar of the history of the place as well.

I feel that it is important for a place to have something like this, even in Singapore. So that things from the past can be stored somewhere, with the story of like how Raffles founded Singapore and then the Japan took over and then Singapore merged with Malaysia and until its Independence. This can be stored so that the next few generations will still be able to know and understand what happened in the past.
